Symptoms occur within the first week after delivery.

This can include trouble sleeping, irritability, fatigue, worry and moodiness.

Symptoms often decrease in intensity as time passes and are usually gone within 2 weeks.

 

Education about postpartum moods is the first line of defense in

preventing postpartum depression.  Having realistic expectations about

new parenthood and feeling supported can also decrease the occurrence

of anxiety and depression as well.

 

1 in 8 women experience symptoms of postpartum depression.

 

Some warning signs of POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION include:

  • Difficulties with sleeping and/or eating
  • Finding it overwhelming to take care of yourself or your baby
  • Intense feelings anxiety, sadness and a lack of energy
  • Don’t enjoy the things you used to
  • Can’t remember the last time you laughed
  • Crying at least once a day
  • Feelings of panic
